Candidates for Elected Office
2020 Declared Candidates
The following candidates have informed us of their intentions to run for office as a Green Party candidate in 2020. Endorsement votes will be held in future general assembly meetings; endorsed candidates will be noted below.
Currently Elected Candidates
Edgewood Borough Council -- 4-year term, 2020-2023
From Ms. Yaney's campaign website, https://taraforedgewood.com:
Tara Yaney has enjoyed living in Edgewood for 6 years and sees serving as borough council member as a way to give back to the community. Among her top priorities are environmental sustainability, public transit, and supporting inclusivity, transparency, and accountability in government. She is an avid bicyclist and ultimate frisbee player. When not active outdoors, Tara is a local musician, and plays flute with the Johnstown and Westmoreland Symphony Orchestras. She directs the Pittsburgh Concert Orchestra Junior Wind Ensemble and she also teaches many private students in the area. Tara has a Bachelors' degree in music from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelors' degree in physics from the University of Pennsylvania.
The Green Party of Allegheny County was proud to endorse two Green candidates in 2019: Tara Yaney (top right) for Edgewood Borough Council, and Riley Mahon (top left) for Upper St Clair School Board. Tara was elected and will serve a 4-year term as borough councilmember starting in 2020! Riley unfortunately was not elected, but received an impressive 800 votes.
GPOAC also endorsed and supported Lisa Middleman for district attorney in the 2019 election. While Lisa decided to run as an independent, Lisa's campaign platform supported many Green values.
We also would like to thank Kelly Yagatich (bottom left) and Richard Weiss (bottom right) for considering a run for Allegheny County Council At-Large and County Executive; while neither were able to collect the thousands of signatures required for ballot access in time, we appreciated their courage to speak out against the growing fracking and petrochemical industry in our region.
With a win and more campaign experience under our belts, we look forward to a successful 2020 that continues to grow the Green movement!
The Green Party of Allegheny County was proud to endorse and support Jay Ting Walker for state representative in the 23rd district in the 2018 election. Jay finished with about 10% of the vote, over 2300 votes! We would like to thank Jay for his hard work for his campaign and the Green Party in general as we look forward to a stronger 2019!
The Green Party of Pennsylvania had also endorsed in 2018 several statewide Green candidates: Neal Gale (US Senate), Paul Glover (Governor), Jocolyn Bowser-Bostick (Lt. Governor)! To learn more about the statewide candidates, see the GPPA press release. All of our candidates ran on a "Green New Deal" that put people and planet over profits.
